I co-ran two national writing competitions (with fellow editor Lauren) through Tauranga Writers Group, which brought in stories and poems from young New Zealand writers — supported by schools all over the country. We then co-edited two anthologies from those submissions: Beyond the Veil and They Came in from the Dark. These collections exploded with imagination — fantasy, sci-fi, supernatural mayhem, horror, mythology, humour, and big messy emotion. Both books were shortlisted for the Sir Julius Vogel Award for Best Collected Work — and the very next year, the series finally won. Being part of this project taught me a huge amount about collaboration, editing at scale, and the extraordinary talent hidden in young writers.
Beyond the Veil
Brings together writing from New Zealand intermediate school students, giving us their unique perspective on fantasy and supernatural fiction. This collection of short stories incorporates imaginative fairy tales, hauntings, horror, sacrifice, and even new takes on mythology. Get ready for a whirlwind ride that will transport you… beyond the veil.
They Came in from the Dark
Write Off Line 2014 brings together writing by New Zealand secondary school students, giving us their unique perspective on horrors lurking in the dark. The stories and poems incorporate murder and mayhem, deep-seated phobias, shadows that can reach out and grab you, ritualistic sacrifices, and modern takes on mythology. But fear not — there is hope and love as they came in from the dark.
