Grim Tales is a special fundraising anthology in support of Tauranga Women’s Refuge — and I’m honoured that my short story “How The Princess Found Her Name” was included.
The project paired 13 survivors of domestic violence with 13 writers (to transform each real survival story into a dark, fairy-tale style retelling), and 13 artists (who illustrated each story after reading it). Each piece also includes a portrait photograph — sometimes showing the woman, sometimes not, depending on safety and comfort.
It was powerful, humbling work — and all proceeds go directly to support the refuge.
“New Zealand has one of the highest rates of female and child assault in the world. One need only turn on the news to hear of the latest case of family violence and abuse. But what of those who fought their monsters and lived to tell the tale? Grim Tales shines a light on the stories of 13 people who survived the onslaught, and are willing to bravely share their tales with those who need a flicker of light in the darkness.”
